1948

TITÌ: THE SPIRIT WHO BROUGHT SFIZIO TO LIFE

Just after the war, with a heart full of courage and a suitcase filled with hope, Titì left his beloved Sicily to build a new future in Rome. In 1948, opposite Termini Station—a crossroads of encounters and destinies—he opened Bar Pasticceria Etna, bringing with him the authentic flavors and traditions of Sicily.

That small shop was more than just a pastry café: it became a gathering place for travelers and Romans alike, a warm and welcoming space where Sicilian culture met the energy of the capital. Before long, Bar Etna had grown into a true icon of the vibrant social life surrounding Termini.

1960

A FAMILY AFFAIR

From its earliest years, Bar Etna was truly a family venture. The children, raised among the aroma of coffee and the constant flow of customers, quickly became an active part of the business.

Giuseppe, the eldest son, moved to New York to broaden his experience. There, in addition to refining his pastry-making skills, he worked in a New York–style pizzeria specializing in pizza by the slice, gaining valuable expertise that he would later bring back to Rome.

His sisters, Gianna and Franca, also played an important role in the day-to-day operation of the café, working alongside their father with dedication and helping the business grow.

By the 1960s, as the Esquilino district flourished and evolved, Bar Etna had become a symbol of the neighborhood and a trusted landmark for both travelers and local residents.

1972

A NEW GENERATION AT THE HELM

After years of tireless work, Titì passed away, leaving his children both the legacy of Bar Etna and the responsibility of carrying his dream forward. Guided by their father’s teachings and the experience they had gained over the years, Giuseppe, Gianna, and Franca took the reins of the business with determination and a spirit of innovation.

During this period, the Esquilino district was undergoing significant change. Once a lively residential neighborhood, it saw the rise of numerous hotels, while the constant presence of travelers and workers transformed the needs of its clientele. To respond to this evolving demand, Titì’s children expanded the business by introducing a tavola calda—a casual dining concept designed to offer quick, high-quality meals to those passing through Termini Station.

1997

THE BIRTH OF ‘SFIZIO PIZZA’

In 1997, the three siblings embarked on a major renovation of the business, determined to give it a more modern identity. It was far more than a cosmetic makeover: ‘Sfizio Pizza’ was born, a new name that marked the next chapter in the evolution of the family business.

Drawing inspiration from the years he had spent in the United States, Giuseppe introduced an innovation that would leave a lasting impression: New York–style pizza. It was a bold idea—a distinctive format that stood apart from traditional Roman offerings.

The concept was an immediate success, winning over customers and quickly becoming one of the most recognizable symbols of Sfizio.

1998

50 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE:
HONORED BY THE CITY OF ROME

In 1998, as Sfizio celebrated its 50th anniversary, the business received an important recognition from the City of Rome. The award was presented by Francesco Rutelli, then Mayor of Rome, during a ceremony honoring some of the city’s most historic and distinguished businesses.

The award represented more than a symbolic milestone – it was the culmination of half a century of hard work, passion, and dedication by the family.

Over the course of fifty years, what began as a small pastry shop opposite Termini Station had evolved into a landmark for travelers and a shining example of a family-run business that remained true to its founding values while embracing change and growth.

2010

THE THIRD GENERATION TAKES THE LEAD

In 2010, after dedicating their lives to Sfizio, Giuseppe, Gianna, and Franca decided together to pass the business on to Giuseppe’s children, marking the end of one era and the beginning of a new chapter in the family’s history. It was a significant transition, made possible by the dedication and contribution of all three siblings to the growth and success of Sfizio.

The responsibility officially passed to Teresa and Giovanni. Although they came from very different professional backgrounds—Giovanni as an engineer and Teresa as a conservator-restorer—they chose to leave their careers behind and devote themselves fully to the family business.

While stepping away from day-to-day management, Giuseppe, Gianna, and Franca continued to play an essential role behind the scenes, offering their experience, guidance, and unwavering support as trusted advisors.

2023

A FAMILY LEGACY SHAPING THE FUTURE: THE 4TH GENERATION

In 2023, another important handover took place: it was time for Leonardo, son of Giovanni and great-grandson of the founder, Titì, to take the lead. This transition marked the culmination of a journey that began in 2019, when Sfizio underwent a major renovation, refreshing the look of the business and symbolically ushering in a new era.

The transformation went beyond aesthetics. It also introduced a more modern vision for the business, with Leonardo gradually taking on a central leadership role from 2019 onward.

Leonardo’s connection to Sfizio runs deep. From an early age, he grew up immersed in the atmosphere of the family business. At just ten years old, he would prepare fountain drinks for fun under the watchful eye of his grandfather Giuseppe, and throughout high school he spent his summers working in the shop. These experiences strengthened his bond with Sfizio and helped instill the values that continue to guide the business today.

THE FUTURE OF SFIZIO

The story of Sfizio is the story of a family that, generation after generation, has preserved its roots while continually evolving to meet the challenges of changing times. Today, that legacy continues with a clear and ambitious vision—one that balances respect for tradition with innovation and a forward-looking spirit.

This vision is built on three essential pillars: homemade craftsmanship, the value of people, and multicultural integration.

At the heart of Sfizio is a commitment to quality. Nearly everything is prepared in-house, without the use of pre-made products, ensuring authentic flavors and a truly distinctive experience.
